"Into the Forest: A Study of the Redwood Forest" (Nov./Dec./April)

The Johnson Farm is surrounded by the famous Redwood Forest.  Your students "classroom" will be deep inside a 500 year-old forest with lessons in forest animals, plants, and life cycles. Modern and pioneer forest management will be clearly examined with lessons in forest management, sustainable timber yields, clear cutting, erosion and forest fires. Your students will hear the story of the Gold Rush pioneer who built our farm and how he logged the forest to make his home in the vast untamed wilderness of the wild west.

The "Forest" tour is geared to 3rd-6th graders and is offered November, December and April.  This is a two-hour tour that includes a forest hike, visiting an old-growth forest as well as a recently harvested redwood forest. Take back curriculum to your classroom to review and expand on your visit to the Johnson Farm.  Each child will receive an ornament, that they make from a tree, to take home.

"Simple Machines: Learn them at the Farm" (April)

The Johnson Farm workshop is full of tools and equipment that make the farm work. New and old-fashioned tools fill the workshop with hands-on opportunities for students to learn about simple and complex machines that are used in daily life and in the production of food and fiber.  Students will explore the six types of simple machines and discover the concepts of force and friction in the movement of machines. After their farm visit your students will have a greater appreciation of the variety and creativity which make up the machines of the farm.

The "Simple Machine" tour is geared to 3rd-6th graders and is offered in April. This is a two-hour tour that includes hands-on building in our workshop.  Take back curriculum to your classroom to review and expand on your visit to the Johnson Farm.   Each child will take home a simple machine that they have made at the farm.
